SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah's oldest and largest tobacco shop says a higher tax could run it out of business.

Jeanie's Smoke Shop in downtown Salt Lake City says it doesn't have $125,000 to immediately cover the higher tax on the shop's inventory of fine cigars and other tobacco products.

Owner Gary Klc (Kelch) says he's making plans to close the family business since the 1940s.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert had been opposed to raising tobacco taxes but might have to let it take effect because it provides $44 million to balance the deficit-plagued state budget.

I am not a smoker but let's be fair about raising taxes! All people of Utah should pay their fair share of needed taxes. Reinstate sales tax on food. Let's not sinle out a few to pay taxes, we are all in this together.

Too Gary Don't feel too bad,You will find that after you close your store it is SOOOO nice not to have to pay those sticky tax handouts every month. I know,I shut a store down a couple years ago.
