ROOSEVELT, Duchesne County (ABC 4 News) - 55 dogs taken from a one room cabin in rural Duchesne County have filled the Roosevelt Animal Shelter to overflowing. But help arrived Saturday.
ABC 4 viewers adopted two of the dogs. And animal rescue organizations from across Utah pledged to also take some of the dogs.
The owner of the cabin recently died in the hospital and authorities were called to remove the dogs. On the inital search, 75 were found inside. Only 66 were alive. When they got the dogs to the shelter Friday night and did an initial examination, 11 more were put down by the vet because their condition was hopeless.
Even the surviving dogs -- most of them poodles -- have problems. Kim Farley, the shelter manager, asessed the worst of them, "They're skinny. You feel them and they're just bones. The dredlocks on the dogs are matted with grime and feces. Their nails are growing back into their pads. Their teeth are really bad." She says most of the dogs were need extensive care to recover, but she remains hopeful they can be rehabilitated and make good pets.
For information about adopting one of these dogs, call the Roosevelt Animal Shelter at 435-725-3649. The shelter is open Monday - Saturday.
