Gonzaga headed to Utah for Big Dance as #1 seed

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - EnergySolutions Arena will host the #1 seed in the West Region in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Gonzaga, which compiled the best record in the country at 31-2 and won the West Coast Conference championship, will open the tournament against 16th-seeded Southern University (23-9) Thursday.

The winner of that game will play the winner of the game between #8 seed Pittsburgh (24-8) and 9th-seeded Wichita State (26-8) on Saturday.

Mountain West Conference champion New Mexico (29-5), a sleeper pick to reach the Final Four, earned a 3-seed and will play the champions of the Ivy League, 14th-seeded Harvard (19-9) Thursday. The winner will face either 6th-seeded Arizona (25-7) or the 11-seed, Belmont (26-6) on Saturday.

For the first time since 1994, no teams from the state of Utah were invited to the NCAA Tournament.
