SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - An emergency meeting was held this morning in the Latino community after SB 81 went into effect yesterday.
Tony Yapias with Proyecto Latino de Utah says right now there are no cross deputized law enforcement officials in our state. He says that means no police officers or deputies should be asking people about their immigration status, which is what the law was written to do.
He says agencies have to apply to be a part of the program. Tony Yapias said, “even if a police agency is considering this it could take a minimum of six months up to a year before they'll ever see a police officer in the streets questioning someone’s legal status.”
Yapias also updated the community on a lawsuit planned against the state over the law. He says it should be filed in the next few weeks.
