DeChristopher to work at SLC bookstore

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - An attorney for Tim DeChristopher says the environmental activist won't be allowed to take a job at a Unitarian church, but will work at a bookstore instead.

Attorney Patrick Shea says Bureau of Prisons officials didn't want DeChristopher serving his work release in the church's social justice ministry because his crime was related to social justice.

Shea tells the Deseret News DeChristopher will now work as a clerk at a rare books store in downtown Salt Lake City.

A Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman told The Associated Press his agency couldn't comment on the case.

DeChristopher was convicted of bidding on oil and gas leases without paying for them in an effort to keep the parcels undeveloped. He's finishing out his two-year sentence at a halfway house.
