OREM, Utah (ABC 4 News) - As Arizona deals with backlash from its new immigration law, a Utah lawmaker is busy drafting a new law for Utah.

The Deseret News is reporting that Representative Stephen Sandstrom of Orem is working on a bill that would use Arizona as a model.  That state's new law allows police officers to pull anyone over who they believe is in the country illegally and ask for citizenship documentation.

Sandstrom says a new law is necessary to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into Utah.  Opponents say it will only lead to racial profiling.

I think that they should implement the same legislation that they did in Arizona, because illegal immigrants understand and know there breaking the law and anyone who harbors them. All languages have the word illegal; Spanish (ilegal), German (Verboten), Japanese (iri-garu), so if all nations have the word illegal in there dictionary then they must know the word illegal.I believe that what Arizona's legislature has done is what all legal citizens of this nation want to have implemented to law. What our U.S. Congress needs to do is give all illegal immigrants is Amnesty of time, in which they give all illegals 6 mos. to leave the United States, during this time if they have children that are U.S. citizens to find them legal residents (friends) to look after them until they can fulfill getting the proper identification to live in this country, and if they can't find someone for them to live with they must leave as well, in some ways they should leave with them as punishment for what their parents have done. Illegal is illegal it can't be change either way. A clear message needs to be sent to all nations that border or and don't that they are responsible for there citizens entering illegally into this nation or any nation without obtaining the proper id or paperwork to enter, and if they don't will be incarcerated to the fullest extent of the law. That would up and include prison time and forfeiture of ever obtaining legal status or travel status in any nation. People say we are immigrants in this nation, but the problem is our fore fathers were the immigrants we are the decendants of them. The true citizens of this country are the American indian. I myself have no issue with immigrants who wish to live here as long as they follow the guidelines in which to enter. All immigrants have the opportunity, but rules have to apply if there not then they are just empty words on parchment. Let the same legislature happen here, force the masses that fail to abide unwelcome.

I think it is about time we do something. I am a tax paying law obeying citizen, and I am so tired of supporting those who come over and expect us to pay for there medical bills, education and food. I am all for the person who wants to become a US citizen and goes about it the way the law is written, but too many have been let in and lived off of our hard earned money, and why should we foot the bill. The crime rate is way to high and I think they know that they can get away with it. It is about time we put our foot down and take back our country and stop feeling sorry if it upsets someone. If they have any ways to make this better, we would love to hear them. It just makes me so mad that we cater to them, do you think it would be that way in there country, we would get the same treatment? It is so sad to go into a store and you are the only one how speaks english, and the other comment below is right, why should we have to press 1 for english, or any number for that matter. This is America and that is our language. We need to bring back what our Country stands for and what we belive and what our forefathers did so that we could live in a free land. Just Tried

I applaud Arizona and hope Utah as well as other states adopt the same law. It is NOT racial profiling; it is simply law enforcement. And it applies to ALL nationalities, not just Hispanic. It offends me to think that the illegal immigrants show so little respect for our country as to think they are exempt from our laws. There are millions of immigrants that have made America their new home and have managed to do so without violating the law. If they truly want to live here then asking that they follow our laws is not an unreasonable expectation.

Send ALL illegal immigrants back to where ever they came from. They're ILLEGAL! They're breaking the law. Catch them any way you can! This is a great idea,

yea, looks like the majority want the law upheld. Now, those politicians from the AG, Legislature, Governors, law enforcement in every state in the nation grow some 'courage' and get a bill in place to represent the best interest of United State Citizens and people who are here in this country LEGALLY and stop bowing down to illegal causes. They are not here legally so why do they have rights beyound ours? Free medical, education, government services....what country in the world would give people who illegally entered that country - of course, it is next to impossible to enter another country illegally without being arrested...

IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT IF THEY WOULD TRY TO ASSIMULATE !! In my oppinion ! Most definately, local law enforcement should be involved, if you were to lok at the statistics there already involved due to the local crimes being committed in almost all the counties. If we wait long enough you will be so far behind the 8 ball, it will almost seem as an impossible task. Ariz. Gov. was actually forced into sign into law their most recent immigration bill. Calif. is right where Az. is as well. I am from the United States of America not of the, United States of MEXICO, El Salvador, Guatamala, Honduras, Beliz or anywhere south of the U.S.A.. I think Mexic and the rest should let us have cart blanche access into all of their rich natural resources for our own prosperity, after all we have been taking care of them for so long now that they even think they have the right to crap on our flag go and lower our flag and raise their countries flag and BOLD enough to think they have a RIGHT to Protest in our streets against our Gov't. because we want to shut off the FREEBIES, like Money, Education, Food stamps OOps (Social Assistance) and free housing when I personaaly have worked most my life since I was 14 and paid taxes etc... and have been out of work for more than several months and do not even qualify for squat. Yes they are not here legally and they are violating many many city, state and municipal laws. Half of them have illegal ID. I myself have had my ID stolen and or reproduced and found that it was being used for other than my personal use and even my Grandchildren 2 of them are not even old enough to have a job let alone credit, had their identity taken and bills charged against them and yes it was by illegals. They want to shut down Gitmo, because we shouldn't act like that we are a Country of Laws? ok well lets enforce them. Just a few reasons as to why I feel our local, state, city an municipalites should be charged with this task.

I hope this comes to debate in Texas! People seem to forget what were discussing here is "ILLEGAL" immigrants....meaning they are not here "LEGALLY". They are braking the the LAW. What Arizona has had to to is create a law for something that is already illegal.....In other countries you cannot go anywhere with out your papers....ANYWHERE! They can ask you for the at random. If you are there legally your ok...if not be prepared to go home. I think the same should be done here. We have been passive too long as a country and we are going broke because of it.

Way to go Utah. Those opposed to the law obviously do not live in an area that is negatively affected by this influx of illegals. Government officials sit up in their million dollar homes and do not even have an idea of what the normal person goes through everyday. Illegals are draining our educational system, healthcare system, etc. I am not racist at all, my husband and children are Mexican. I am just tired of the problems caused by the illegals.

I am so tired of hearing illegals, politicians and now our own atty general say this bill proposed in Arizona is unconstitutional. What about my constitutional rights? I have to prove I am here legally by providing my certified birth certificate, social security card and proof of residence to get a driver license. I am not protesting by waving the country flag of my grandparents who came over by boat in 1910 and 1912 going through Ellis Island, being checked for all types of diseases, proving they have a sponsor, place of employment and residence before stepping foot on US soil. Illegal is ILLEGAL and it doesn't matter from what country. This law will not destroy families IF you came here legally and not 9 1/2 months pregnant just to have a US citizen baby born to you so you can reap all the benefits from the government that child brings you. GO HOME and come back legally. If there were less illegals, time to come to America legally would be shorter. If I have to prove I am a citizen when applying for my driver license, people, when asked can prove they are here legally. It should not be a problem for law abiding citizens and people with appropriate documentation showing they are here legally. Just how many people who mean to do harm to America, not just Mexicans (hey, amexicano, this means you since you played the race card) have to come in across the border before we have to put these laws and more patrols on our borders in effect? Where are our rights?

Immigration reform call it what it is. This is the Japanese internment camps all over again, politician here in Utah are campaigning on "A family platform" yet they push for the same unconstitutional kinds of reform that Arizona has. A law that destroys families! I personally know thanks to the 1996 immigration reform act it is impossible for my wife to come to the US even though we are married in the USA and have a US citizen daughter together. I have been trying for 10 years now we need the 1996 immigration reform act replaced by one that is humane.
