Code 3 for a cancer cure stops in Salt Lake City
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 NEWS) - A firefighter is battling cancer for the third time and taking his message of hope across the country.
When you think of the dangers facing firefighters you often think of burns or collapsing building not necessarily cancer. But, cancer kills more firefighters than injuries do.
The Code 3 For A Cure Foundation was founded by by retired firefighter Lorenzo Abundiz, a 27 year veteran. He is currently fighting his third round of cancer.
He was battling the disease in a hospital in 2006 and while he was there decided to start the foundation. He has logged about 20-thousand miles bringing his message of hope nationwide and into Canada.
During the journey they honor and remember those firefighter or those who dreamed of being a firefighter and lost their battle.
Abundiz shares his experiences, gives hope, support and encouragement to others fighting cancer.
Firefighters like Captain Bob Silverhorn with the Salt Lake City Fire Department who are currently battling cancer found comfort in his message.
Silverhorn says, "We're a big family and when we get diagnosed with cancer we need to be there and help each other out".
Abundiz says if enough people focus their efforts on finding a cure for cancer it will happen. Thier slogan is, "We're firefighters, if we can extinguish fires we can extinguish cancer", they are doing that one mile and firestation at a time.
