SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A bill that would have required state water officials to inspect canals for safety risks and canal companies to make plans for repairs and improvements to reduce risks has been diverted to an interim committee for further study.

Senate Bill 185 was prompted by a deadly mudslide last summer that killed a mother and her two children in their Logan home. The Logan Northern Canal broke in the slide, prompting discussions about how to manage the waterways.

Sen. Gene Davis, a Salt Lake City Democrat who sponsored the bill, acknowledged Wednesday that a $945,000 fiscal note over the next three years would be too much for lawmakers to support.
