DAGGETT COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A 12-year-old boy, camping with his Boy Scout group went missing Friday.

Officials said 12-year-old Jared Ropelato from Hooper, Utah was on a camping trip with his fellow troop members and leaders before he disappeared.

Daggett County public information officer, Karen Peterson said that the group hiked into the Spirit Lake area Thursday night and camped. On Friday the group was fishing at the lake around noon when they noticed Ropelato was missing.

Officials say that spotty cell phone service has limited communication.

Peterson says that a Boy Scout leader contacted the boy’s family via text message. The family member then called the sheriff’s office who organized a search.

Peterson says that because of rough terrain search and rescue teams are scouring the area on foot and horseback. Dog teams from Salt Lake City, Ogden and Wyoming are en-route to assist in the search.
