SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The American Civil Liberties Union is opposing the proposed sale of a Manti street to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Citing First Amendment issues, The ACLU of Utah recently sent a letter of opposition to the Manti City Council, which was set to make a decision on the proposed sale last week.
The ACLU also reported that they have requested records of the August 18 Manti City Council meeting.
The ACLU says the street has been widely used and very busy during the annual week-long Mormon Miracle Pageant held on the grounds of the LDS Temple in Manti.
Church spokesman Scott Trotter released a statement about this potential sale saying, "Several years ago the City of Manti approached The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints about acquiring a parcel of land adjacent to the Church's Manti Temple. The property is now a dead-end road and no longer useful to the city. The Church and City are currently in discussions to determine the viability of moving forward with the sale."
