TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4) - How do you feel when you see an ordinary person carrying a gun on the street, in your grocery store or coffee shop? If it makes you jumpy, there's a group trying to change that and they're using more guns to do it.

Zach Wellman takes his gun wherever he goes.

“When I wake-up in the morning the firearm goes with me when I go home at night my firearm goes with me,” he said. Wellman is part of a national movement of 2nd amendment activists demonstrating their right to carry their weapons in plain view. It's called open carry.

Utah is one of 43 states allowing any non-felon to openly carry an unloaded gun. But even though people can doesn't mean they should, according to some.

"I’m frankly fearful when people can wonder around my grocery store or my coffee shop with their fire arms,” said Gary Sackett, of the Gun Violence Prevention Center. "It creates anxiety and fear in the population at large."

ABC4 wanted to know how ordinary people feel about seeing someone carrying a gun in broad day light. So reporter Kim Johnson set up a hidden camera experiment at Coffee Club in Taylorsville.

It didn't take long for Wellman and his favorite accessory to get noticed.

From looks, to stares even jaw dropping gazes. One man even eyeballs the gun not once, twice, but three times.

“It was unusual to see a regular person come in with it but it didn't bother me,” said Kelly Watkins.

But it did bother Nikki Roberts who couldn't ignore the weapon as Wellman makes small talk. “He had a gun on his belt,” she said. “I'm kind of scared of guns-- people don't walk around with guns on their belts.”

But other gawkers just assumed he was law enforcement and the gun actually made them feel safer.

“I just thought that maybe he was off-duty,” said Joy Genessy.

Joe Tonumaipea agrees, “Thinking he was an officer I felt safe.”

Amy Tam though had just the opposite reaction. She tells ABC4 she wanted to run when she saw the gun. “First I think maybe he's an officer then I’m like maybe he's not,” she said. “If he is that's good if he's not then I want to leave as soon as possible because I don't feel comfortable seeing someone who's like showing the gun walking around.”

But if Wellman had his way everybody would be used to seeing guns in public places, not only is it his right he argues, but it promotes safety. “They say an armed society is a polite society,” he said. “I believe in personal protection for myself. I have four kids so I want to protect my family and bystanders as well."

Sackett disagrees and believes guns are not the answer to a safe society. “The fact is people who wear those weapons aren't in the business of fighting crime,” he said. “Untrained people are really not in a position even if something were to occur to make judgments about how to use or when to use deadly force.”

You can't open carry everywhere in Utah. Airports and courthouses are off limits. But surprisingly you can carry at public universities. Utah is the only state with that law in the books.

If I'm informed correctly, you CAN open carry inside an airport, just not past the secured area.

JAFO2012 Your opinion is very one sided let me explain I carry my firearm openly daily with proper training I have had a positive experience with local law enforcement. However I have had poor experiences with law enforcement officers who bring their personal views into open carry I had a Officer Dana Pugmire from West Valley City who belittled me swore at me and felt it was perfectly okay IA shows I was right. With proper training with dispatchers and police officers you would see a big difference and a reduction of man with a gun calls. Police need to understand a open carrier is not a threat. A police officer needs to understand just because I am carrying a firearm I still have rights you need to respect. A police officer puts himself in a bad situation when he goes above and beyond his scope of the law. I will treat a Officer with respect who treats me with respect. I am not the problem remember I would gladly step in and assist you whenever the need would arise. A open carrier wants to be left alone we are not looking for a police interaction nor do we want to spend 30 Minutes with our local law enforcement. I open carry daily on Trax and buses with no issues whatsoever I open carry in Salt Lake City with no problems and in West Valley City with very little problems. I have met the Governor several times Senators, Elected officials who have no issues all while open carrying. I have met several officers who respect open carry even went out to dinner with a Officer who wanted to learn more about citizen open carry. You state open carriers have very little training but personally feel training comes with gun ownership. Several times I question standards set forth with local police department with training. For example the West valley officer who shot at a moving car or the Salt lake officer who shot a individual leaving McDonald's We all need to work together police and citizens.

Thank you! "Man with the Gun" I just love that statement. Especially when it's a 911 call involving a concerned citizen. If you can't distinquish the difference between a law abiding patriot of the 2nd amendment and a junkie crazy with cruel intentions then you are the one who is crazy and needs to get out in the world more. Would you rather pay the taxes for the safe and sound police state? Or would you rather trust the volunteer patriots of our freedoms like the right to bare arms and the duty to serve our country? You can pay for a cop for every block or you can trust your neighbor with the Glock!

Correction to story: They stated that you can open-carry an "unloaded" firearm in 43 states. This statement is not complete. Where it is true it can carry unloaded, you can also carry it loaded in most states. Carrying unloaded is a bit pointless. Ask a Police office if he carries his unloaded. Police carry firearms for their protection, not for yours. I carry a gun because carrying a cop is hard on my back.

Speaking from a law enforcement (LE) point of view, the open carry law creates several problems for police officers. I respect the second ammendment, but I also appreciate common sense. In a post Columbine world where it's unfortunately common place to have mass public shootings, the general public expects LE to do what we can to prevent this. So when someone calls to report a "Man with a gun" call, we have a duty to respond and investigate. That is a call that ties up resoiurces. Multuple officers are usually dispatched. Most police departments require their officers to carry concealed off duty or in plain clothes so as not to cause alarm in public. If for some reason, it's not concealed, our badge is on our belt, right next to it, so we're properly identified. As far as training goes, I will concede that a small percentage of "civillians" who "live" at firing ranges may have more trigger time that the average police officer. But there's more to it than that. When & where NOT to shoot, is there an alternative to deadly force? Would a less lethal option be appropriate? John Q Citizen is not trained to make those split second decisions or usually doesn't have those options available to him/her. If someone wants to carry, be smart and carry legally concealed.

"Please make sure to correct the last few lines of this article. You can carry a firearm on Public Universities if you have a Concealed Firearm Permit. If you do not have a CFP you are in violation of federal law. " Close. To carry at a public university you need to have a CFP or you will be in violation of state law, not federal law. The federal 'gun free school zone' laws are for K-12 only.

Im about as pro-gun as it gets and I think carrying openly just serves a point. either its Im prepared or I think im a bad a s s.. I personally dont see a reason to openly carrying a weapon it seems to me it would cause more issues.

Good for Utah! Keep that law on the books and put MORE laws like that in to play. It will make Utah the safest place to live! Believe that! It will also attract honest, hardworking, and honor driven people to Utah. And more business! All good things! Lower crime, better people, better economy. I see no bad in this.

I both conceal and open carry mine depending on where I am going and what the occasion is. I love to see people open carry. Because the facts and figures show that cities where more people are armed there is less violent crime. Those are the facts and no matter what Sackett says it doesn't change facts. He is from an anti gun group... of course he's not going to like guns. I agree that law enforcement doesn't train nearly as much as most of us "regular citizens" do. Most people don't even notice when I carry. I have had a couple questions and one comment in the years that I've carried. I take those opportunities to educate people and they are alright with it. Those that don't like guns, don't get one. But don't you dare tell me I can't carry mine. Gun violence prevention center... take notice! If you want to prevent gun violence teach people about firearms and let law abiding citizens carry! You will prevent all sorts of violence. Other wise change your logo to the Democratic symbol because you just make asses of yourselves.
