90-year-old man released after spending night in jail

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 News) - A 90-year-old man, Abdul Samad Masjidi, was arrested Saturday night after allegedly going after family members with a knife.

Police say they were called to Masjidi's home about a disturbance Saturday night and upon arrival observed the man going after his son with a knife.  

Masjidi was arrested for aggravated assault and spent the night at the Salt Lake County Jail.

Police say that they had to arrest Masjidi despite his age because the law requires an arrest when the individual is a danger to others.  

Family members of Masjidi say they are unlikely to press charges.

They believe discrepancies in medication levels are to blame for his behavior and say that Masjidi does not remember the incident.
