VERNAL, Utah (AP) - A 10-year-old girl from Vernal has died after she was knocked from a horse during a barrel racing event earlier this week.

Police say that the girl was riding in an arena at Western Park on Tuesday when she struck a pole and fell from her horse.

The Deseret News reports the girl was treated by emergency crews at the scene and then taken to the hospital. Assistant Vernal Police Chief Ken Campbell says in statement she died Wednesday at Primary Children's Medical Center.

Police called the death a "tragic accident." They haven't yet released the girl's name.
