SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Monday ABC 4 is taking action when no one else will. We're bringing the Speed Zapper to a Salt Lake man who tells our Brian Carlson drivers speed on his street. And so far everyone he talks to tells him it's someone else's problem.
“I call the police they tell me it's a UDOT problem, I call UDOT they tell me it's a city problem,” said John Flint, Salt Lake City resident.
Flint tells ABC 4 he's getting the runaround from everybody.
“It just, it needs to stop,” said Flint.
He said drivers constantly speed on his street on 600 East. No one was willing to help, so he turned to ABC 4 & the Speed Zapper.
“I watched your channel; I know what you do,” said Flint.
And what we do - is zap speeders going too fast.
"Do you know how fast you were going?” Reporter Brian Carlson asked one speeder.
“I don't know. How fast?” the speeder asked in reply.
“We zapped you going 38 miles an hour down there,” Carlson said.
“Wow! That's pretty fast,” said the speeder.
“Do you speed like this all the time?” Carlson asked a second speeder.
“No, I'm really just in a hurry,” the second speeder said.
We found drivers going well over the 25 mph an hour limit. We zapped one man going 17 mph over.
“So do you normally drive 42 on this street?” Carlson asked a third speeder.
“Uh, I can't tell ya, probably,” the third speeder said.
“You have no idea?” Carlson asked.
“No,” the third speeder said.
Some drivers had no time or desire to explain their actions.
“I'm really really late,” said a fourth speeder.
“Ya, I saw that,” Carlson replied. “You're going 35 miles an hour in a 25.”
“I understand that there are some people who are concerned about the way you drive on this street. What would you say to those people?” Carlson asked the second speeder.
“Um, I live on this street; so I get it,” she said.
One man, well, read for yourself -
“Is this how fast you go every morning?” Carlson asked the first speeder.
“I try to keep it down because they've got signs down there and they've got little kids playing around here and stuff,” said the first speeder.
“You noticed the signs out there?” Carlson asked.
“Yup I have,” he said.
“But you drive this fast anyway?” Carlson asked.
“Yup,” he said.
“Why do you do that?” Carlson asked.
“I don't know,” he replied.
“You don't have an explanation?” Carlson asked.
“Nope not today,” he said.
He admits he lives there too.
The message Flint wants to share with his neighbors is simple.
“Just slow down, that's all we ask is you just slow down and think about what you're doing to other people,” said Flint.
Next time he's hoping ABC 4 isn't the only one who hears it.
