TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) – This week ABC 4 is taking the Speed Zapper to Taylorsville, where one worried neighbor wouldn't quit until we showed up. When we did, Brian Carlson found a speeder who tells us there's nothing wrong with driving too fast.
“So because everybody else is doing it, it's okay for you?” Reporter Brian Carlson asked a speeder.
“That's just the world today. Welcome to 2010,” she said.
That's the attitude of a speeder we zapped going 14 mph over-the-limit on Tamarack Road in Taylorsville.
If not for Tammy Parker, we would've never have showed up.
“I'm really glad you guys are here,” said Tammy Parker, Taylorsville resident.
Tammy is what we call a squeaky wheel and wouldn't quit emailing us until she saw the Speed Zapper on her street.
“I'm worried about children getting hit,” Parker said.
So Taylorsville police and I went to work. We zapped one man going 12 mph over, who admits his driving is unsafe.
“What do you think it would be like to have speeders going at your speed in your neighborhood?” Carlson asked another speeder.
“Um it is dangerous,” he said.
You remember the first speeder? She was oblivious to her speed and the 25 mph limit.
“Do you know how fast you were going?” Carlson asked.
“I thought I was going 20, maybe 23, he said I was going 38,” she said.
“We zapped you going 39 miles an hour right there,” Carlson replied.
“Okay,” she said.
She told Carlson there's nothing wrong with the way she drives.
“So you think if there was a kid who walked out into the middle of the street you'd be able to stop in time?” Carlson asked.
“Absolutely, I have excellent brakes, and I can foresee everything,” she said.
And she has some advice to worried moms afraid of her driving habits.
“What would you say to those moms?” Carlson asked.
“Watch your children, this is a road, they should not be playing in the street,” she said.
If our worried neighbor could talk back –
“Why can't you go the speed limit? It's 25.” said Parker.
And she's hoping other drivers will get the same message.
