Speeder talks to Reporter Brian Carlson (Bill Brussard)
TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) – This week ABC 4 is taking the Speed Zapper to Taylorsville, where one worried neighbor wouldn't quit until we showed up. When we did, Brian Carlson found a speeder who tells us there's nothing wrong with driving too fast.

“So because everybody else is doing it, it's okay for you?” Reporter Brian Carlson asked a speeder.

“That's just the world today. Welcome to 2010,” she said.

That's the attitude of a speeder we zapped going 14 mph over-the-limit on Tamarack Road in Taylorsville.

If not for Tammy Parker, we would've never have showed up.

“I'm really glad you guys are here,” said Tammy Parker, Taylorsville resident.

Tammy is what we call a squeaky wheel and wouldn't quit emailing us until she saw the Speed Zapper on her street.

“I'm worried about children getting hit,” Parker said.

So Taylorsville police and I went to work. We zapped one man going 12 mph over, who admits his driving is unsafe.

“What do you think it would be like to have speeders going at your speed in your neighborhood?” Carlson asked another speeder.

“Um it is dangerous,” he said.

You remember the first speeder? She was oblivious to her speed and the 25 mph limit.

“Do you know how fast you were going?” Carlson asked.

“I thought I was going 20, maybe 23, he said I was going 38,” she said.

“We zapped you going 39 miles an hour right there,” Carlson replied.

“Okay,” she said.

She told Carlson there's nothing wrong with the way she drives.

“So you think if there was a kid who walked out into the middle of the street you'd be able to stop in time?” Carlson asked.

“Absolutely, I have excellent brakes, and I can foresee everything,” she said.

And she has some advice to worried moms afraid of her driving habits.

“What would you say to those moms?” Carlson asked.

“Watch your children, this is a road, they should not be playing in the street,” she said.

If our worried neighbor could talk back –

“Why can't you go the speed limit? It's 25.” said Parker.

And she's hoping other drivers will get the same message.

ebv721, obviously you're entitled to your opinion. But you're wrong when you say Speed Zapper doesn't fix problems. I invite you talk to the mothers on Hillside Lane in Millcreek who now have a safe place for their kids to cross the street thanks to Speed Zapper. Or, a Bluffdale woman who now has speed limit signs on her street thanks to Speed Zapper. Or, a Salt Lake man who said no one else would help him except Speed Zapper. Speed Zapper is not a joke to these real people, who now have real change.

Carlson, the story becomes staged once you edit and put the drivers words out of context. As a reporter you spin the interview to make it worse than it really is to create drama and make news. That's your job. Everyone is an actor and you cut and paste where you see fit as the director. I'm not saying the speeders aren't real, that would include everyone. I'm talking about the story you created for entertainment and a rise out of your listeners. And it is an ultimatum. We've all seen the stories and know people that were in that predicament. You don't have to be ignorant, ask the officer yourself. Speed Zapper is a joke, it doesn't fix problems, just puts random people on the news because there is nothing better to report in Utah. Its staged entertainment.

This is Brian Carlson, the reporter for this story. Kaekae, ebv721 - as fun as it would be to assume Speed Zapper is staged. Everything you see in each of these stories is legitimate. The speeders you see in each story are real. The commments they make to me are real. There is no ultimatum. It is up to the discretion of the officer whether or not they issue a ticket. I have interviewed many drivers who also received a citation. Sometimes I am as surprised at what they say as you might be. But I guarantee it's real.

I have to agree with ebv721; Speed Zapper is totally staged! If you claim that you've never driven over the speed limit, you're lying to yourself.

In case you haven't heard of the SPEED ZAPPER, the cop gives you the ultimatum of either getting a ticket and continue on your way or interview with just a warning. The story has been done a thousand times. Only a warning was issued, DUUUHHH. I find it comical that those who claim never to speed are driving contradictions. Whether its 1 mile or 20 miles, everyone does in neighborhoods and highways, so everyone shouldn't take such offense. Stupid or smart ass.. you BECOME ONE when a camera and microphone is shoved in your face if you've ever done journalism or reporting. Silly small minded people who claim to be saints or know it-alls. Find some friends and get a life. IT WAS STAGED.

I hope that the police took her license plate as they wrote her a ticket, so they could watch for her to hit a child or a another car. Not only does she have a moronic attitude, does welcome to 2010 mean that we can drive like fools without worries? Just what does welcome to 2010 mean? I think she should be thrown in jail for wreckless driving and stupidity, but then again if stupidity were a crime, the over crowding would have to include some Unified Police Officers. I hope she is still singing that welcome to 2010 song, when some other driver with her attitude speeds through a stop sign and smacks into her.

I grew up on Hwy 6 and leared from a young age to stay out of the road- a road is for driving on, not playing in. Slow drivers are as much to blame as fast drivers when it comes to safety. Ever been behind a slow driver and done everything you can to get away?

You can tell by the way she responds and her picture that she probably is a teenager. A lot of them have that mentality. They think they know everything and that they own the road!

Just so you know its called the NEWS, they are looking for drama and it is all staged. Great reactions from crowds, thanks for the entertainment!!

I love that comment she made " . . . and I can foresee everything." If she was such a psychic, she should have seen the speeding ticket coming.
