TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - This week the Speed Zapper is returning to Taylorsville. ABC 4’s Brian Carlson zapped speeders there a month ago, and they slowed down, but a school principal in the area tells us the job isn't over.
You may remember this woman -
"So because everybody else is doing it, it's okay for you?” Carlson asked a speeder.
“That's just the world today. Welcome to 2010,” she said.
She was just one of several speeders we zapped on Tamarack Road in Taylorsville back in October.
Principal Jeff Sell at Prince of Peace Elementary School saw our story, and is glad we slowed down drivers, but he said children in the neighborhood still need a more clearly marked crosswalk.
“It's a crosswalk that currently states it's for regular people but there's no signage that says it's a school zone, which when there's a school, it'd be nice to know that you need to slow down,” said Sell.
So we showed the problem to Taylorsville City Engineer John Taylor.
Taylor said although Tamarack doesn't have enough traffic to qualify for flashing lights, and a lower speed, he believes putting an additional crosswalk for kids who live at the other end of the street is possible.
“We need to evaluate where the pedestrians are using the crosswalk most neighborhood wise and make sure we’ve got it in the proper location” Taylor said.
Taylor plans to get a head count in the spring.
“You don't really get a good count in the winter time a lot of people aren't walking and crossing the road in the winter time,” said Taylor.
If the numbers are enough, Tamarack Road will have two crosswalks.
“If enrollment goes up we’ll be able to assign that as a school crosswalk,” Taylor said.
