PAYSON, Utah (ABC 4 News) – ABC 4 is taking action to dig into a concern about speeding construction trucks. One ABC 4 viewer in Payson tells us the big rigs are a big problem. So we sent our Speed Zapper Brian Carlson to find out if they're really behaving badly.

They drive past all hours of the day.

“They pick it up coming up this way,” said Adam Beesley, Payson resident.

Beesley lives on 1700 West in Payson. He said he’s worried about speeders, mainly construction trucks traveling out to I-15. He claims they're putting people in his apartment complex at risk.

“It just takes one accident to take a life and I don't want to see that,” Beesley said.

He said drivers are speeding and wants it to stop. So we paired up with Payson police to put truck drivers under the gun. We found speeders, but almost none of them truckers. In fact when we talked with Safety Manager Andy Anderson with Ames Construction, he gave us a copy of the letter they give to all their drivers which states – “If a complaint is made from a member of the public or law enforcement that identifies a specific truck or company, the driver will be immediately removed from the project for it’s duration.”

So who's doing the speeding? Everybody else.

“We zapped you going 44 miles an hour right there,” Reporter Brian Carlson told one speeder.

“Do you know how fast you were going?” Carlson asked another speeder.

“Uh, 35,” the other speeder said.

“Do you know what the speed limit is?” Carlson asked.

“25,” he said.

Most were cordial, but one man didn't exactly care for our questions.

“If you noticed it changed why didn't you slow down earlier?” Carlson asked a third speeder.

“I don't know, why do people speed?” the speeder said.

“I'm not trying to bust your chops, I'm just asking...” Carlson replied.

“You’re being a jack*** and I don't like the way you're talking to me,” he said.

Whether they like it or not, now that we and neighbors took action, police said these flashing lights will be a sign of things to come.

“Hopefully people will come to realize it's not a joke,” said Beesley.

If you need Brian to zap speeders in your neighborhood, let him know about it. Just go to the Speed Zapper section of abc4.com. Tell him about the problem. And he’ll zap ‘em.

I used to live just a couple of blocks east of I-15 and almost 5300 south when the original reconstruction of I-15 had began at least 15 years ago. Every night the piece of equipment used to break up the old asphalt would slowly rumble on by for months on end making noise for hours and hours. I remember complaining to myself, when is this going to end. Turns out that with some patience and if I had only been smart enough at the time to wear earplugs that like everything else and time itself it was just something that was sure to pass just like a test of my patience which at the time I had no idea I was being tested for.

I'm not anti-truckers, some of my family are truckers. But it just gets a little frustrating that there's an alternate route available for them to use, and to save 2 minutes of drive time they come this way so all we hear ALL DAY LONG, 24 hours a day LITERALLY, is these blasted trucks. My kids can't even sleep at night because they're so loud. As I type- I've counted 12 trucks in 3 minutes go by. We can't open our windows. We can't enjoy the fresh air. It's SO dusty in our houses. I can't stand it and I can't wait to move. I've talked 2 people out of buying one of these condos because of this ridiculous street.

You are all have your own opinions and yes some truckers do go to fast. But not all of them are that way. My husband is one of them and i know he is a very good driver. He worries more about me driving and has seen to many accidents in his years of being a truck driver. We should not down on all of them just because some of them are bad drivers. Some of them are just trying to make a living and support there families just like the rest of us and we do need the roads fixed and there is no way to get the materials there but with the help of these trucks.

Just a little incite from the other side. I am a driver on the I-15 project, and I obey the traffic laws. The speed limit used to be 40 along most of the roads out to the pit. A big set of doubles doing 40 on a little narrow back road does look pretty fast moving. I'll be the first to agree with you that 40 is probably to fast for the area. None the less it was the speed limit. The truck speed has recently been reduced to 30, and it is heavily enforced by Local Police, DOT, Highway Patrol, and Utah County Sheriff. As if that is not enough, PRC also enforces they're own policy that even if just one mess up, the driver will never be able to work on the project ever again. I have a family to feed so its just not worth it to me to take risks. Its more to some of us than just trying to keep our job though. Some of us do take pride in trying our best to be safe and courteous drivers. We are not all the "Evil Trucker" some seem to think we are. We are just people trying to make an honest living just like you. The real issue here isn't the speed at all, but more simply that there is just considerably more truck traffic on these roads now than these people are used to.

I also live on 1700 West, next to Adam. I just wanted to say, that the ONLY reason those Truckers weren't speeding when the cop was out there, is because when ever there is Highway Patrol or city Police sitting on this street, pulling people over, the Truckers get on their radios and inform all other trucks of their presence. Happens EVERY time. Every other day- you can count on them going just as fast as the other speeders without radios to warn each other. I hate this street.
