TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Here's a question for you, when you speed, how often do you do it because you're late? That's the excuse our Speed Zapper Brian Carlson is hearing over and over again. This week he’s zapping last minute drivers.
“I'm late,” said one driver.
“My daughter is late for school,” said another.
“You're a little late?” ABC 4 Reporter Brian Carlson asked a third driver.
“Yes,” she said.
Police said it's not surprising.
“People will do just about anything,” said Officer Jason Richman, Taylorsville Police Dept.
And Taylorsville resident Brandon Cox sees it all the time.
“When people speed they go pretty quick,” Cox said.
Cox and his young family live in Taylorsville on Ledgewood Drive. He said late or not, too many drivers speed on his street. And he's worried one day someone's going to get hurt.
“It doesn't take too long to have a kid rush out into the middle of the street whether it's mine or somebody else's,” he said.
So, together with Taylorsville police ABC 4 took Speed Zapper to Ledgewood Dr. to take aim at speeders playing catch up.
“I am in a rush to school right now. I apologize for going so fast,” said one driver.
“Is this the first time we caught you speeding or does this happen more often?” Carlson asked another driver.
“No this is the first time,” she said.
“Ever?” Carlson asked.
“In this neighborhood, in a neighborhood,” she said.
ABC 4 caught several speeders on Ledgewood Dr. One woman in particular was going 38 miles an hour in the 25 mph zone.
“So why go 13 over?” asked Carlson.
“I honestly wasn't paying attention I was just in a hurry,” she said.
Cox understands people have places to go, but he says they need to do it safely.
“Hopefully this is a good wake up call for someone to watch their speeds ya know,” said Cox.
And that's exactly what one of our punctually challenged drivers said she intends to do.
“Are you aware when you're speeding down a neighborhood like this you're putting kids at risk?” Carlson asked.
“Of course. I don't think that as I'm speeding. I don't think about that. I'm just trying to get my daughter to school. I'm trying to get to where I need to go. So, I need to take that into account,” she said.
If you need Brian to zap speeders in your neighborhood, tell him about it. Just go to the Speed Zapper section of abc4.com. Tell Brian about the problem. And he’ll zap ‘em.
