ABC 4 Reporter talks to speeding driver in Lehi (Randy Kendall)
LEHI, Utah (ABC 4 News) - They're fast, they're dangerous, and their driving habits are making neighbors nervous. This week the Speed Zapper is traveling to the Traverse Mountain area in Lehi. People there are worried speeders are making it unsafe for a new school.

Up hill or down, neighbors in Traverse Mountain are worried about speeders on Chapel Ridge Road.

“Man, it's scary,” said Steve Mazzella, Traverse Mountain resident.

Mazzella emailed ABC 4, and said he's almost been hit several times. He's worried with the new elementary school going up around the corner, someone's kids are going to get hurt.

"It's a recipe for disaster," said Mazzella.

In come the cops and the Speed Zapper.

“So do you know how fast you were going?” reporter Brian Carlson asked one driver.

“42 in a 30 I guess,” he said.

“You guess?” Carlson asked.

“Well I thought it was a 35,” the driver said.

“Do you know that it's posted right up the street there?” Carlson asked another driver.

“Really, oh now I know,” said the other driver.

Together with Lehi police ABC 4 zapped several drivers. Some got a ticket. Others opted to explain their actions.

“I live right here, I usually don't speed,” said the second driver.

The driver, who had his wife and young child in the car at the time, said he understands why his neighbors are concerned about him endangering their kids.

“As a father does that make sense to you?” Carlson asked.

“It does,” he said.

“What do you think would happen if that happened to you?” Carlson asked.

“I dunno, that’s something that nobody wants to think about,” he said.

But another man in the same neighborhood -

“I was only going 10 miles over,” said the driver.

- doesn't think his driving is that big of deal.

“Do you think you could brake in time if one of the kids in the neighborhood was going to dart out in front of the street?” asked Carlson.

“Uh, I definitely can,” said the driver.

“Alright you're confident, you're a better man than me,” Carlson said.

“Well I didn't know if I was going to be on the news I'd be getting grilled like this,” the driver said.

Whether it sinks in today or not Mazella hopes drivers on Chapel Ridge Road think twice about their speed the next time they get in the car.

‘I'm just worried about the safety of the kids,” said Mazzella.

If you need Brian to zap speeders in your neighborhood, let Brian know about it. Just go to the Speed Zapper section of abc4.com. Tell him about the problem. And he’ll zap ‘em.

Just goes to show you that we live in a child centered culture which enjoys being the hero by victimizing its citizens. In the process while trying to protect our young, we go to great lengths to police everyone else. I would suggest that making it easier to go different routes to get where we want to, at higher speeds, would prevent much of the issue. I drive in this area every single day to go to and from work and the police are privy to entrapment. It wouldn't surprise me at all if I walked up on a Lehi cop hiding in the bushes with a walky-talky and a speed gun. Maybe if there were real crimes happening in this podunk town they wouldn't be pulling over every single person who breaches the un-realistic speed limits in that area. Take the helicopter parents out of the equation and you have cops harassing local citizens, that's it.
