MIDVALE, Utah (ABC 4 News) – ABC 4 is hearing speeders are becoming a growing concern in Midvale. One man tells ABC 4 fast drivers in his neighborhood are making it dangerous for his family. So, Brian Carlson is bringing him the Speed Zapper to put the problem in reverse.
Daniel Brown tells us fast cars are becoming too common on 7th East in Midvale.
“I've got teenage kids and I see speeders all the time,” said Daniel Brown, Midvale resident.
Unless the trend starts to change, he fears the worst.
“I'm afraid something's going to happen to them,” said Brown.
So with the help of Midvale police, the Speed Zapper went to work. We found several speeders. But what was interesting was the difference in their reaction. We zapped two women both going 39 miles-an-hour in a 30 mile-an-hour zone.
“Do you think that's fast?” Reporter Brian Carlson asked the first woman.
“I don't know. I think it's over the speed limit, but I don't think it's fast,” the first woman said.
“Were you paying attention to how fast you were going?” Carlson asked the second woman.
“To be honest, no. I was drinking my smoothie and I didn't know I was going that fast, and I will be more careful to pay more attention,” said the second woman.
“Is that something you usually do?” Carlson asked woman #1.
“No.” she said.
“You seem kind of nonchalant about it,” replied Carlson.
“I'm just in a hurry to get to work and he has to get to school,” woman #1 said.
“Is that something that happens often?” Carlson asked woman #2. “Do you not pay attention?”
“I would say no, not usually, but I guess sometimes when I’m driving to work, I'm thinking about work and getting there,” said woman #2.
“What do you say to those people (worried) about your driving?” Carlson asked woman #1.
“That we should all be more careful and go the speed limit,” said woman #1.
“Does that mean including you?” Carlson asked.
“Yes,” she said.
“What do you say to those families who are worried about your driving?” Carlson asked woman #2.
“I definitely will be more careful to keep their families safe. I don't want to speed and hurt a child and hit them,” woman #2 said.
Brown doesn't want them to either.
“They need to learn to slow down,” said Brown. ‘Life is too short as it is.”
