DRAPER, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Speed demons, leadfoots, no matter what you call ‘em, people in Draper claim they've got ‘em. One man is telling ABC 4 they need the Speed Zapper to fix it.
It's a problem for cops, and neighbors claim it's like a summer speedway.
“It's pretty dangerous,” said Tom Gudden, Draper resident.
Gudden lives on 13800 South in Draper. Just weeks ago a car hit a boy on bike near where Draper Canal Trail crosses his street. He said they need the Speed Zapper.
“I'm worried about the kids. I'm worried about people on the trail,” Gudden said.
Ask and ye shall receive.
“Do you know how fast you were going?” Reporter Brian Carlson asked a driver.
“I don't.” she said.
“Do you feel it's safe to be going that fast?” Carlson asked another driver.
“Oh no of course not,” the other driver said.
We found a few new excuses.
“So I understand you're a little late?” Carlson asked the first driver.
“I am I'm trying to get to bible study,” she said.
“Bible study?” Carlson asked.
“Yes,” she said.
Some refreshing honesty.
“You can be honest with me, is this the first time you've ever been speeding on this road?” Carlson asked a third driver.
“Um probably not,” the driver said.
And one man eager to share his side of the story.
“So you're late to a meeting?” Carlson asked.
“Yah, it's an excuse, but we all got them, they all stink,” he said.
Each driver we talked to, quick to admit their fault.
“What would it be like for you if you actually hit someone crossing the street there?” Carlson asked a driver.
“Oh I'd be devastated, absolutely devastated. There's no excuse, there's really no excuse,” the driver said.
And promised to stop.
“Do you know that puts a hazard for people who are trying to cross?” Carlson asked.
“Oh definitely,” he said.
Now that they know our friend tom believes he'll see a change.
“People will obey the speed limit; people just need to be aware of what they're doing,” said Gudden.
If you need Brian to zap speeders in your neighborhood, let Brian know about it. Just go to the Speed Zapper section of abc4.com. Tell him about the problem. And he’ll zap ‘em.
