SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A Salt Lake woman worried about speeders hurting children and pets in her neighborhood is asking ABC 4 take action. She lives just off I-80, and said drivers treat her street is if it were NASCAR. This week Brian Carlson is taking Speed Zapper to Salt Lake City and zapping drivers ignoring the odometer.
Ashton Ave. in Salt Lake City may look like a safe place for pets, but some said it's far from friendly.
“It's like the Indianapolis 500,” said Robin Hughes, Salt Lake City resident.
Hughes lives right on the corner. She said drivers on Ashton speed 24 hours a day.
“It's really kind of scary,” said Hughes.
That's where the Speed Zapper steps in. We caught drivers going well over the posted 25 mph limit.
“Do you know what the speed limit is on this street?” reporter Brian Carlson asked a speeding driver.
“I bet it's 30,” said the driver.
“It's 25,” said Carlson.
“Did you see the sign that said 25?” Carlson asked another driver.
“No I did not,” the other driver said.
Each driver was seemingly unaware of the limit or their own speed.
“Do you know how fast you were going down that road?” Carlson asked a driver.
“Probably about 30,” said the driver.
“I clocked ya going 40,” said Carlson.
"I'm sorry I thought this was a 35 actually,” said another driver.
“Did ya?” asked Carlson.
“Yes I did,” the other driver said.
People like Hughes understand drivers can be in hurry, but said it’s no excuse to put her and other neighbors at risk.
“Slow down, you don't have to be in a hurry to go to where you're going," she said.
“What do you have to say to those people if you did?” Carlson asked a speeding driver.
“That I apologize,” said the driver.
“Uh, I'll go slower next time for sure,” said another driver.
In the end, that's all Hughes really wants to hear.
ABC 4 also called Salt Lake Police about the drivers on Ashton Ave. They said if anyone has a problem with speeders in Salt Lake City they can call the police department and they will look into it as well. We gave Hughes the number and she filed a complaint.
