MILLCREEK, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Thanks to the Speed Zapper, kids in Millcreek now have a safe place to cross the street.

You may recall a few weeks ago ABC 4's Brian Carlson was taking action to get a school crossing installed on a dangerous street there. Monday, he shows why worried parents can now breathe a sigh of relief.

It may sound like just another construction site, but for Kelley Birkeland, it's the sweet sound of victory.

“This'll make a big difference,” said Kelley Birkeland, worried Millcreek resident.

Rewind now to earlier this spring when we zapped speeders on Hillside lane who were making it dangerous for kids to cross.

"It's just too scary and the other moms feel the same way,” she said.

Birkeland said they'd tried since last fall to get safety improvements put on Hillside. But no avail. That was until we showed the problem to the Salt Lake County Public Works Department. Staff surveyed the area, and agreed Hillside needed a school crossing.

ABC 4 took action and now, it has one.

Not only that, crews installed edge lines to narrow the road, bright school crossing signs, and what they call advance lines to warn drivers of what's ahead.

“It helps slow people down,” said Doug Swain, Signing Supervisor, Salt Lake Co. Public Works Dept.

On looking neighbors couldn't help but notice.

“I think it's fantastic. It's something that's been needed for a long time,” said Milton Burbidge, Millcreek resident.

And when we showed it to our worried mom, she couldn't be happier.

“(We) don't have to worry about somebody getting hurt first before anything has to happen. Thank you Channel 4! Yeah!” said Birkeland.

If you need Brian to zap speeders in your neighborhood, let him know about it. Just go to the Speed Zapper section of abc4.com. Tell him about the problem. And he’ll zap ‘em.
