MILLCREEK TOWNSHIP, Utah (ABC 4 News) – ABC 4 continues to take action to slow down speeders. You may recall a few weeks ago we showed you a street in Millcreek. Moms called it dangerous, we sent the Speed Zapper, but our job was only half done.
ABC 4’s Brian Carlson is returning to Millcreek to give kids a safe area to cross the street. Instead of zapping drivers on Hillside Lane, this time, we're showing our findings to Leon Berrett from Salt Lake County Public Works. Berrett decides where school crossings and crosswalks are allowed on county roads.
Flash back to several weeks ago when we zapped drivers for a group of worried moms.
“Do you know how fast you were going?” Carlson asked one driver.
“I do, over the speed limit,” he said.
Kelley Birkeland and other parents in the neighborhood said drivers there pose a serious threat to their children.
“I won't let her cross Hillside by herself. I've got to be there with her because it's just too scary,” said Birkeland.
Berrett said because the section of the street where kids cross is so wide it encourages speeders. So, in addition to installing a school crossing he said Hillside also needs white edge lines.
"And that keeps drivers in the center of the street which makes it safer?” Carlson asked Berrett.
“Yes,” said Berrett.
We showed him how the Upland Terrace Elementary School's safe walking path requires kids living west of the street to cross at their own risk. From our report, and what he's seeing now, he thinks Hillside makes an excellent case.
“Does it qualify?” Carlson asked.
“Yah, this location qualifies I believe,” said Berrett.
Berrett adds, he still needs to check with school leaders, but if everything checks out, school crossings could be on Hillside Lane as soon as a couple of weeks.
