KAYSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - ABC 4 is taking action to slow down speeders who don't pay attention. In this week's Speed Zapper, Brian Carlson travels north to Kaysville, where drivers admit they should know better.
Cops are all too familiar with it, and neighbors are worried about it.
“I'm afraid someone is going to get hurt,” said Trish Hutchinson, Kaysville resident.
Hutchinson tells us speeders on 200 North in Kaysville have no clue what the speed limit is.
“I think that people are just not paying attention,” she said.
You ask the drivers themselves, and they admit it.
“Do you know how fast the speed limit is?” Reporter Brian Carlson asked one speeder.
“I didn't, but (the police officer) told me it was 30 mph,” the speeder said.
“Um, probably 30 mph because it's residential, but I'm not sure, and I drive it all the time,” said another speeder.
So we paired up with Kaysville police to take action and zap drivers who need a little education.
“So do you think you should know better?” Carlson asked the second speeder.
“Oh yea,” she said.
“Do I think I should've known better? I should be aware of the speed limit. Yah that's my responsibility,” the first speeder said.
Not every driver we stopped was as quick to admit they were wrong. We zapped this man going 10 mph over. He agrees it's important to be alert. But -
“Why do you think that didn't happen for you today?” Carlson asked a third speeder.
“I can't really say,” he said.
And it's that “I don’t know” answer, that neighbors worry about. They hope it won't take something bigger to get drivers to wake up.
“Is it going to take a child getting hit, for people to realize that this is a serious subject? This is something that we need to pay attention to,” said Hutchinson.
Perhaps a ticket or two will help in the meantime.
