Taylorsville (ABC 4 News) -- "Utah's best mayor" will leave his post to join the cabinet of newly-elected Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams, Russ Wall's office announced Thursday.

Wall, mayor of Taylorsville since 2006, said his resignation will become effective on Jan. 8, 2013, when he formally takes over as the new Director of Public Works for Salt Lake County. Prior to his election as Taylorsville's mayor, Wall served for four years on the city's council.

"I have very mixed emotions," Wall said during the announcement Thursday. "I have loved serving the residents of Taylorsville, but I will look forward to assisting Mayor-elect McAdams in his vision for Salt Lake County."

"Mayor Wall has demonstrated his passion for public service," said Salt Lake County Mayor-elect McAdams. "I know he will be a wonderful addition to my team."

Wall said there were many motivating factors that led to his decision to change jobs, but he specifically noted the opportunity to serve a greater segment of the population as the county's Public Works Director. Wall also stated that all of his original goals and objectives as Taylorsville's mayor have been accomplished.

"The city has a great staff right now," he said. "I know our city will continue to move forward in a positive direction."

Wall also said that he anticipates more opportunities, with his new job, to spend time with family.

In May, Wall was named "Utah's Best Mayor" by Best of State magazine.
