SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Utah's First Lady Jeanette Herbert, who ran a day care center for 23 years, says adults must be more aware of children and their needs.

She made the comments during a fund raising dinner for the Boys and Girls Club of South Valley Thursday night at The Woods on the Ninth reception hall. Herbert, who has previously said that she will focus on childhood issues while in the governor's mansion, shared her desire for more adults to reach out to children. Herbert told stories about how "a little love can go a long way with a child" and how important it is to support organizations who provide programs for children.

Several examples of what can happen to children who get some extra attention also played out at the fund raising event.

Two Hillcrest High School students who have spent nearly everyday at the Midvale Boys Club for the past several years performed a song they composed. Steven Guzman and Antonn LaTour - aka "Ay-L and "speedy G" say they learned rhythm and music expression as well as how to use sound engineering software at the Boys and Girls Club.

A Midvale mother also spoke at the event. She talked about how the clubs have "changed her life and the lives of her three children."

ABC 4 News anchor Don Hudson served as the evening's Emcee and also shared stories of playing Boys Club football and basketball while growing up and watching his father reach out and make sure other kids were involved in the clubs sports programs.
