MT. OLYMPUS, Utah (ABC 4 News) - The Unified Police Department says a search and rescue operation on Mount Olympus turned tragic for a member of Utah's law enforcement community on Saturday.

Salt Lake County Sheriff James Winder told ABC 4 News that a Utah Highway Patrol trooper was assisting a DPS helicopter crew from the ground during the search for two teenagers who had been reported as missing.

Winder said that after the teens were located and rescued, the trooper fell more than 60 feet from a cliff to his death.

The trooper was identified as Aaron Beesley, a 13-year UHP veteran.

Winder said no one witnessed the fall, but UPD investigators believe Beesley may have been trying to retrieve a fallen backpack when he slipped and fell.
