SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – It’s possible a fight over cheap booze landed two guys behind bars for stabbing a man to death.
33-year-old Moses Geng and 45-year-old Robert Wallace are behind bars tonight. It’s little consolation for Emmet Schad's grieving mother.
“He was kind of an affectionate guy. Come here, give me a hug,” said Eleanor Iron Lightning.
Schad’s family says he was not homeless. He was just a good guy who hung around the wrong areas.
“He didn't have a drug problem. He had a drinking problem, yes,” said Tina Hansen. Emmett lived with her for years.
Around midnight July 9, police believe Wallace and Geng stabbed Schad. Schad later died at the hospital. After initial investigations, it appears the fight started over a bottle of alcohol.
“I can't believe that they would kill him over a half a gallon of cheap vodka,” said Iron Lightning.
The stabbing happened at the TRAX station at 350 West and South Temple. Before the pair were even arrested, Eleanor did some investigating of her own. She had heard rumblings of Geng’s involvement. She headed down to Pioneer Park and found him.
“When I gave him the obituary, he just crumbled it up and started yelling, 'this is my best friend, this is my best friend!'" said Iron Lightning.
But, Geng is behind bars for killing his so-called best friend along with Wallace. Who, after police read him his Miranda Rights, admitted to investigators he had given Geng a knife and Geng is the one who stabbed Schad.
But the arrest of these two men doesn’t seem to be enough for Eleanor.
“Nothing. Absolutely nothing is going to bring my son back or take the pain out of my heart. It doesn't make a difference,” said Iron Lightning.
Both men are at the Salt Lake County Jail facing aggravated murder charges.
