WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A teenage girl was hit by a car on her way to school Tuesday morning.
The girl was walking in the cross walk heading to Kennedy Junior High at 4575 South 4800 West, but a driver didn't see her in the dark street.
"I was woken at about seven o'clock to a girl screaming her lungs out," said Julie Petty, a resident of the area.
ABC 4 News decided to take action and find out why the school zone light were not flashing. We contacted the Utah Department of Transportation which pointed us to the school district. The district referred us to the police department. West Valley police department never returned our calls.
Residents near the accident say the dangerous crossing has been a problem for years.
"If it's dark I think the lights would help, definitey because I see about one accident a year on this road," said Ian Allred, a resident of the area.
Resident think turning the lights on earlier in the morning would be a good first step.
"Turn them on and they can see and they can see the kids so the kids can cross safely," said Jamie Phillips, another resident in the area.
The girl reportedly sustained a broken arm, but is expected to survive.
ABC 4 plans to stay on top of this until all question are answered.
