SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Students at Whittier Elementary in Salt Lake City received gifts they hopefully will never need to use.
750, 24-hour emergency earthquake kits were given out to every child, faculty and staff at the school.
They were donated by students from Open High School of Utah.  That's a virtual charter school that has students from all over the state.
Those students went door-to-door collecting donated supplies for the kits.  Inside are items like food, water, blankets, hand sanitizer and flashlights.
Whittier's principal, Margery Parker says the supplies enables teachers to keep students from getting too hungry or too thirsty and will help them stay warm in an emergency.
The kits will help if students have to stay outside for long periods, like in an earthquake or gas leak.  They will also be used if the school is in lockdown and kids aren't allowed to leave their classrooms.

What a great project and service these students performed! And for us in the United States is an extra bonus. Sometimes we all forget we should be doing things for each other in addition to the services we supply for other countries. Congrats to Open High School!!! I'm proud to know that you've stepped up to the plate!
