DRAPER, UT (ABC 4) - A handful of homeowners living along the east bench in Draper are cleaning up after heavy rain poured down on their neighborhood, sending mud and floodwater into their property.
Draper emergency workers, neighbors and homeowners living near 2000 East Pioneer Road and along Highland Drive and the Steeplechase area shoveled mud and water away from their property into the early morning hours Thursday following Wednesday's late night storm. Others filled sandbags trying to prevent a disaster.
Draper City activated its Emergency Operation Center at City Hall to assist the handful of residents with flood and mudslide damage in the area. Unified Fire Authority assisted homeowners with flooding by providing large debris pumps to help pump water and mud out of basements.
At least three homes were damaged by mudslides, Draper officials say. The basements of two homes were filled with mud. Another home's garage was damaged. Dozens of yards and streets are filled with mud.
One homeowner told ABC 4 News that she and her husband were preparing to go to bed when they heard loud sounds coming from outside their home. They say, that's when they knew the mountain was coming down on them and they evacuated their home.
