SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A renewable energy program is giving a bright, green holiday gift to Utah's Hogle Zoo and Salt Lake City's Gallivan Center.
Electrical power used for light displays at both locations will be offset by renewable energy certificates from Rocky Mountain Power's Blue Sky program. The certificates mitigate the environmental impact of electricity use by avoiding carbon dioxide emissions.
The Gallivan Center lights go on this Friday and stay on through Valentine's Day. The annual Zoo Lights display begins Saturday.
Rocky Mountain Power launched the Blue Sky program in 2000. About 26,000 residential customers in Utah and more than 600 businesses have signed up.
Participants pay a premium on their monthly bill and Rocky Mountain Power use the fees to buy electricity from renewable sources.
