SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Thousands of people wearing nothing but their underwear and a smile ran in downtown Salt Lake City Saturday.
Crowds of people lined the streets. Some stood in stunned silence, while others showed obvious support for the undie clad crowd. The Salt Lake Undie Run was an idea born on Facebook. Nate Porter thought only a few hundred would show up. "Started it a month and a half ago and I thought it was going to be me and a couple hundred friends and fifteen thousand people RSVP'd and I don't know how many we had here today."
With a possible fifteen thousand people running in their skivvy’s, Porter saw a chance for a Guinness world record. After all, the current record stands at just 550 people. But, when the judges showed up the enthusiastic undie clad crowd ran away. "For Guinness when you hit the horn that means for five minutes everybody has to stay in their location. When I hit the horn they blew through the fence."
But he says not to worry, this may have been a first, but it won't be the last. "Always next year. Undie run 2012 is right around the corner."
Those watching today stayed put, to see what was around the corner and Porter says for that reason, the run was a success.
"We are just trying to make Utah lighten up change the state for better in our eyes."
