SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Utah's lakes, canals and rivers might not look dangerous, even inviting during the summer; but they can quickly become a death trap.
Unfortunately, that happened to Corbin Anderson. While the four-year-old's family was taking pictures along the Weber river he fell in and nobody was able to get him until his body was found two weeks later.
This tragedy is devastating and unfortunately, happens far too often.
To be ready for the worst case scenario, Salt Lake City Firefighters practiced their water rescue skills Friday.
The team put this car into a canal in Salt Lake City, the goal: how would you get a person out, if they were stuck inside.
No matter the situation, Capt. Bruce Healey told ABC4 the goal, "Solve the problem, not be part of it. Safety is critical."
Firefighters are obviously crucial, but they have to do the job right. While Search and Rescue Teams train, we wanted to know, what can all of us do to be ready for a problem.
Capt. Healy said, "First thing is get them some floatation, throw them whatever you can find."
The key there, get something to throw to them. Never go in after someone, unless you have been trained and know what you are doing.
Capt. Healy said, "We don't want to have two victims, instead of one victim."
