SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The man who used to be Salt Lake's mayor says the current mayor should not get another 4 years in office, not if he doesn't change the way he governs.
Rocky Anderson made this startling statement about Ralph Becker in an exclusive interview with ABC 4.
When Anderson decided not to seek another term as Salt Lake mayor, Becker was elected in his place.
But listening to Anderson these days, it almost sounds like he wishes Becker had been beaten.
Anderson made clear he's not running for his old job but sounded like he was.
"We need leadership. We need people to take a stand. We need people who will speak themselves rather then leave it for some spokesperson.”
Anderson criticizes Becker for not supporting the jazz festival or the youth arts program.
He also disapproves of Becker's handling of the new police headquarters, the Northwest Quadrant project and for allowing a skybridge to be built over Main Street.
Anderson says, "I like the people there. They're nice people. But it's hard to handle some of this."
So, we asked Anderson point blank: should Becker be reelected?
ABC 4: "That sounded pretty close to you saying you don't think Ralph Becker should get another 4 years?”
Anderson: “Not if they're like the past 2 and a half or three years."
As for Mayor Becker, his office responded by saying,
“We believe the residents of Salt Lake City are aware and supportive of Mayor Becker’s leadership and accomplishments. His commitment to further sustainability, transportation, and transparency initiatives through collaboration speak for themselves as he continues to serve as mayor of our capital city. “
The entire interview with Rocky Anderson can be seen on “On the Record”.
It airs Sunday morning at eight, right here on ABC 4.
