OREM, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Video captured a Payson High School basketball player who kneed his Timpanogos opponent in the groin. Many who've seen the footage, don't believe the hit was an accident.

"I got up and was guarding him to stop the in-bounds pass," said AJ Coombs, Timpanogos High School student.

Timpanogos High School basketball player AJ Coombs is explaining how he was the victim of a cheap shot at his sophomore basketball game last Friday against Payson High School. You can see it in home video shot at the game. It happens fast, but if you look closely you can see player #44 for Payson knee Coombs in the groin. Coombs immediately dropped to the floor.

"My stomach hurt really bad, I felt like I was going to throw up a lot, they actually got me a garbage can at the half in case I threw up," said Coombs.

The hit was so hard, Coombs had to be carried off the court. After the game Coombs said the Payson player apologized and told him it was an accident. But when ABC 4 showed the video to people in Utah County they didn't agree.

"He totally did it on purpose," said Jeremy Behle, Utah County resident.

"Do you think he did it on purpose?" asked Reporter Brian Carlson.

"It looks like it," said Krista Clark, Utah County high school student.

"He lifted his leg up to run, you don't lift your leg up to run," said AJ Hendrickson, Utah County resident.

Coombs' parents are upset.

"I was pretty angry at the time," said Susan Christensen, Coombs' mother.

"It was all I could do not to jump out onto the court," said Art Coombs, Coombs' father.

What you may find interesting is that on the Payson High School's athletics website, if you go to the bottom of the page it lists a Sportsmanship pledge, that reads in part, "We Will... play fair and by the rules", because - "It's the right thing to do."

When Carlson showed the pledge to Coombs he laughed.

"Does that make you laugh?" Carlson asked.

"Ha ha. Yah," Coombs said.

He understands no one's perfect, but doesn't feel the player who kneed him in the groin showed much sportsmanship.

"Do you think he treated you with respect?" Carlson asked.

"I don't believe so, it was in the heat of the game, he made a bad choice, it happens to all of us," said Coombs.

so the best way to "teach" somebody sportsmenship you put them on the news and bag on payson, oh wow you would make a great teacher. he didnt "attack the guys manhood" on purpose were you watching #44 face during the play, i highly doubt it

I don't think this story should have been put on the news but isn't it funny how you think that this story was an attack on #44 and the only way to justify him and Payson high school is to attack the integrity of the boy who was the victim in the initial game. The hypocrisy is almost humorous. I was at the game and i know for a fact that #44 did it on purpose. yes this story has been blown way out of proportion but is the best way to teach these young men about sportsmanship even possible by pointing fingers? the fact still remains that a player got kneed in the groin and that is one of the cheapest shots you can take. to attack a guys manhood is not right nor acceptable.

Ironically, Brian Carlson and ABC4 dealt an intentional low blow by running this one-sided piece. Whether the original act was intentional or not, it was a shoddy piece of "reporting" and the only person who should be considered for suspension is Brian and and whoever let this onto the air in the form it took. Showing a short video clip to people on the street and then asking a leading question is not really a reliable source for corroboration. Whatever happened to balance and integrity in reporting. Disgraceful and embarrassing!

Payson high school newspaper/video kids are doing a follow up story showing both sides. It's classy and I think they are doing a good job of objective journalism. I am a timpanogos guy and I just feel awful for both kids. Embarrassing for both. This got blown way out of proportion by some people jumping the gun. Payson is a pretty classy school and Lunt is a great ball coach. I'm sure he handled it the right way. It's too bad that something that could be a good teaching/learning opportunity got messed up. I hope abc news shows what they payson kids are doing as a follow up. It's great to see what we adults can learn from the fantastic kids at both schools.

Way to get both sides of the story, I was a player in this game and I had eye contact with #44 the entire play. Accidents happen, and Abc4 should have waited to see our side of the story too.

This news story "Smacks" of Bullying by KTVX. At the end of the newscast, the reporter states, “The injured boy does not want people to attack the Payson High school player...." If that is the truth, then why did the parents have the story published in the first place? Secondly, WHY, Brian Carlson; DID YOU REPORT IT? It looks like the attack has already begun, and both KTVX and the boys parents are casting the proverbial “first stones!" Interestingly, readers need to know that this story was published without the support of, and against the direct wishes of the Timpanogas High School Administration. This type of media bullying, could prove to be a far more serious crime, than what our youth experience among their peers and classmates. KTVX has done terrible damage in allowing this 1-sided story to permeate the airwaves. At this point, it wouldn’t matter what the other school’s side of the story was. So much negativity and venom has been spewed over this chat room, the entire situation has become an embarrassing debacle. I think Nadine Wimmer needs to be called to see if she would be interested in publishing a story on KTVX bullying a high school sophomore! . . . . . . . Brian Carlson and KTVX, you owe Payson High school and #44 an apology.

This article is just garbage! All this story does is belittle Payson High and #44 making them the enemy. Timpanogos High School and ABC news should be embarrassed by doing this article. I have lost so much respect on both parts today, there is no way to tell if #44 actually had done it intentionally. Plus if you look at the other leg it goes the same height as the other leg. All this is retaliation from over reacting parents! If I were this reporter I would be embarrassed to do this article and story, this wasn't directed toward Payson High School but they made everyone in Payson High the enemy by pointing out the school sportsmanship policy like everyone in Payson was violating this rule, and there wasn't any evidence that #44 actually did it on purpose! Accidents happen! Garbage!
