SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) -The National Transportation Department wants to further limit the number of hours commercial truck drivers can spend behind the wheel. A decision is expected Thursday on the proposal. If passed, the new regulations would be added to a host of other safety regulations already in place.

Senior Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Rick Oaks says his department sees thousands of commercial truck safety violations every year on Utah roads. He pulled over a truck while our camera was rolling for a mismarked bumper, but ultimately twelve violations were found including brake problems.” This trailer could roll down the road and into oncoming traffic it could just go until inertia causes it to stop.”

Brake issues are the second most common problem spotted by Utah troopers when trucks are pulled over for inspection. The most common violation is driver fatigue.” Fatigue is an impairment the same as someone might be impaired by alcohol or drugs. We just don't respond properly."

The new regulations under consideration by the Federal Government would further limit the number of hours drivers can be behind the wheel. If passed, the daily total would be reduced from eleven to ten. There will also be mandatory thirty minute breaks after seven hours of driving.

Drivers we spoke with were not in favor of the changes. The trucking industry says the additional hours lost on the road will amount a billion dollars in losses.

They point out, and Trooper Rick Oaks agrees, a vast majority of truckers are safe, responsible and professional.

Most truckers are safe drivers, far better drivers than 90% of non-commercial drivers. DOT continually harasses drivers for hours of service, their health and many other issues which aren't taken into consideration with any other group of drivers. It's remarkable to me as they now open the border to Mexican drivers who won't be held to most of the rules and regulations, truck maintenance requirements, EPA specifications etc. as our AMERICAN drivers do. A survey done on several trucking companies in Mexico discovered most if not all of their trucks were in violation of US regulations....BUT they're still going to let 'em come anyway! Stop harassing OUR drivers....go find a foreign trucker to harass because there will soon be loads of them driving unsafely on our roads and highways. Not to mention most do not read or speak English, regardless of the fact our government says otherwise. Must be politically correct my fellow Americans and cater to all of these non-Americans and to hell with our own citizens.

It is against Federal Labor Laws to increase the weight of a workers tools and devices, especially if there is Legal Tools and Devices already in place for the employee to use that are substantially less weight therefore less stress on the employee. Weigh a perfectly Legal Logbook and then Weigh an EOBR, I assure you that you will find that the percentages of Weight increase for this EOBR tool/device is unacceptable and it is highly illegal for companies to make there employees use them. Companies are bound by Federal Labor Laws to provide there employees with the most comfortable Legal tools and devices that are readily available for the employee to perform his or her task. I would also like to point out that OOIDA and other Professional Driver Associations continue to Pay out Good Money to incompetent Lawyers who are supposed to be representing the AMERICAN PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVERS. These are basic Federal Labor Laws that even a rookie attorney should know. Merry Christmas to All! Sincerely,Vegas Dan
