MILLCREEK, Utah (ABC 4 News) He's a hero. Deputies say a Millcreek man helped slow down a serial burglar on Thursday. The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office says the burglar hit three homes in just minutes.

Jeff Colegrove was the second of three victims. He lives at 1400 east 4112 south. Colegrove says he met the burglar in the backyard of his house and ended up tackling him.

Colegrove says,” Well luckily I came home and then I thought, did I have somebody here fixing something? Oh, this guy's breaking in.”

Colegrove says he locked eyes with 25-year-old Kent Stuart. He says he was inside his home and that the burglar was trying to get through some doors on the backside of the house. Colegrove says,” And I knocked on the window and he looked up and I looked up. And he went running and I went running. Next thing you know we’re in a tussle.”

The two men ended up in the front yard as the battle continued. Colegrove is still a little banged up from the fight. He lets us see some nasty scrapes on his legs and says,” Yah I got a little road rash. “

The sheriff's office says Stuart broke away and tried to break into yet a third house at 1476 e 4200 south. Homeowner Kay Folkerson says.” We were very fortunate he kicked in the window that had the alarm system on it.”

It wasn't long before deputies arrested Stuart. He's booked into the Salt Lake County Jail. Meanwhile Colegrove says.” After I got all done I thought ohh jeeze, maybe I should have let him run off but it worked out all right.”

Colegrove says he now realizes that Stuart could have been armed. The sheriff's office says a commendation award is not out of the question for the brave homeowner. The first break in happened at 1110 E Hillview Drive.

West Valley City – On Monday, June 9, 2009 West Valley City will hold a FREE Crime Prevention Seminar about Graffiti awareness at the West Valley City Family Fitness Center, 5415 West 3100 South, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Officer Jacob Shafizadeh, West Valley City’s Graffiti Specialist from the City’s Code Enforcement division will make a presentation about current graffiti trends, how residents can better protect their homes, and methods to remove graffiti quickly. “Graffiti is a crime and an eyesore,” says Officer Shafizadeh. “The faster residents are able to report the vandalism and remove the graffiti, the less chance they have of being hit again.” In addition to Officer Shafizadeh, representatives from West Valley City’s Police Department and Neighborhood Services Office will be available to answer additional questions. This is the continuation of a yearlong series of FREE seminars held monthly with specific topics of concern to residents. The topics were selected from input made by West Valley City’s Neighborhood Watch groups. Presentations at the seminars are made by experts from around Salt Lake County. Families interested in learning how they can work together to understand crime and make their neighborhoods safer are invited to attend. Youth of all ages can be great crime fighters in a neighborhood, they often see and hear things in their circles of friends that adults do not hear or see. “The more information and tools residents have in their hands, the better equipped they are to help make their neighborhoods safer and cleaner,” says Mayor Dennis Nordfelt. “Every resident can help the City understand what is happening in their neighborhood – they are the eyes and ears of West Valley City.” Future FREE seminars include Home Safety (July 13), ID Theft and Senior Fraud (August 10), Emergency Preparedness (September 14), Domestic Violence awareness (October 19) and Gang Awareness (November 9). I agree, this man really is a hero. It is sad that we have to have alarms on our homes to keep criminals out. Every neighborhood should get to know their neighbors and set up a neighborhood watch. That is the best thing to do, keep the scum out of our neighborhoods.

Glad the criminal got caught! Hopefully, he spends lots of time in prison and is sued by the victims of his work. No plea bargaining for this criminal, make it all HARD time! I hope the guy that slowed this moron down is okay!
