Man leads police on chase, jumps into pond

WEST VALLEY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A suspect is in police custody after he led police on a chase and jumped into a pond early Monday morning.

Police in West Valley tell ABC 4 News that it all began when police located a stolen vehicle near 4100 south 1900 west in West Valley. When officers attempted to make a traffic stop on the vehicle around 3 a.m. the driver fled.

Officers in West Valley chased the suspect for several minutes and reached speeds of around 65 MPH. Officers say the suspect took Bangerter Highway to U-201. The suspect obeyed traffic speeds but would not pull over for officers.

The suspect lead officers to Liberty Park located near 700 east 1300 south and stopped the vehicle. The suspect got out of the vehicle and ran to a pond inside of Liberty Park.

When officers approached the vehicle they located a female passenger. According to police the woman played no role in the chase other then being a passenger. She is reportedly cooperating with police.

Officers say the suspect jumped into the pond and apparently began yelling that he could not swim. He was able to reach a median in the pond but would not cross back over to police.

Police deployed K-9 units who retrieved the suspect.
