SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Some tough news from a leader in the Utah Latino community. Tony Yapias says his thyroid cancer is back.

He was first diagnosed with the cancer in his right thyroid four years ago. Surgery seemed to take care of the problem, but now he says recent checks show the cancer has returned in his left side.

He will have surgery on Monday again to try and remove it.

Tony Yapias said, “We’re hoping for the best. I think always being very optimistic, cause I want to get back on my feet and just tackle the issues in the community like we've been doing all the time.”

Yapias has been a leader in the Latino community for many years, most recently leading the fight against SB 81. He says other members of the community will step up while he is recovering.

Yapias says the doctors won't know the full extent of the cancer until Monday’s surgery. We'll let you know how it goes.
