SALT LAKE (ABC 4 News) – Chagas disease is spreading across the country, causing concern in doctors.

Chagas disease is caused by a parasite called a Triatominae or “kissing bug.” One bite from the insect could leave you with lifelong problems.

Chagas disease is hard or impossible to cure. It can have a long incubation period before you may notice any symptoms, which include swelling at the infection site, a rash, body aches, loss of appetite, fever, fatigue and headaches.

“If this is becoming a new epidemic then we better jump on it now before it becomes a large epidemic like aids did,” William Skokos, a Salt Lake area resident, said.

Some doctors are comparing the disease to AIDS because it spreads easily, either genetically or through blood transfusion.

Chagas originated in Central and South America, but about 300,000 people in the United States have contracted it.

In extreme cases victims will develop enlarged hearts or intestines, which can fail or burst, causing sudden death.

“It affects your heart as well, so yes, it’s very concerning for me,” Skokos added.

Alright. First of all, being bitten is not what causes the disease. It's the parasite that's shed in the excrement of the insect. When you "scratch-your-itch" from the bite, you might, let me repeat "MIGHT" open up a wound for the parasite to enter the bloodstream. Very unlikely. If per chance you do become infected (because you are one of those people who scratch themselves bloody), well, first of all, there's something really wrong with you. Second, the disease the parasite causes is called "chagas", it affects the parasympathetic nerves of the GI tract to the affect that you literally stop shitting. You die from toxic shock. Third, if you have this disease, YOU WILL KNOW! and if you don't get medical help, you're an idiot. You are even more of an idiot if you let this article scare the hell out of you! The chances of contracting this are next to zero. It can not be transmitted person-to-person either via sexual contact. The news will say ANYTHING to sell stories and they don't care about causing panic. Nor do they know what they are talking about. Don't be fooled. This is NOT a major health concern. I just found and caught one (Rubio) on my balcony sliding glass door in Frederick, Maryland, and it is presently 1:00 in the afternoon, not evening when they usually appear. I guess they are spreading across the U.S.

This article should have been accompanied by information about the distribution of Triatomine bugs. They don't even live in Utah! The disease is not even spread via bites, but by exposure to the insect's fecal matter. "Epidemic"? "Spreading across the nation"? No. Quoting some random residents? Lazy journalism. And likening Chagas to AIDS is completely irresponsible and sensational.

I pray to God that funds to find a cure at early stages of this bug bite are available and researchers can find a cure, or a spray you can use as we do for Mosquitos comes on the market very soon. 300,000 Americans is way too many infections, especially due to the summer "vacation" people will be traveling across the Nation!
