FARMINGTON, Utah (ABC 4 News) – One of the Bountiful Junior High School teachers charged with having sex with a 13-year old student is working on a plea deal.

39-year-old Valynne Bowers was in court in Farmington for a brief appearance on Monday.

She's charged with rape and sodomy for alleged encounters that happened with a student at her home.

Her attorney says they are doing a psychological, sexual exam to see if there's some explanation to what happened.

He hopes a plea deal will keep her from long prison time.

“I'm hopeful the state will be willing to work something out you know that I think is fair to the victim and fair to Valynne as well,” said Rich Gallegos, Bowers’ attorney.

Bowers' defense is keeping her case separate from the other teacher charged in the case, Linda Nef.
