HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah (AP) - Snow doesn't just affect commuters traveling Utah's roadways. It can make work difficult for the pilots at Hill Air Force Base, too.
The base says it loses about 7 percent of scheduled flying days each year because of weather, or about 17 of 232 scheduled flight days.
Operations can be canceled by snow from October through April. The commander of the 388th Operations Support Squadron says on days when snow is bad enough to cancel a mission, an alternative is usually possible.
Sometimes pilots fly during bad weather, though less-experienced pilots may not conduct missions on those days.
Officials say flying during snowy weather also can be good practice.
