SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – A major snowstorm is expected to bury parts of the northeast this weekend and its ramifications are being felt in Utah.

By Friday morning, at least 13 flights headed east to and from the Salt Lake International Airport had been canceled.

Because of the snow storm everything is closed there and all the flights are canceled,” said Vladimir Galdev, a flier stranded at the Salt Lake airport. Galdev is trying to get home to Russia, but his connecting flight at JFK is one of the more than 4,700 flights canceled.

We might be stuck for several days here,” he said. “I guess we are going to book hotel and get back to the city and wait.”

The Salt Lake airport is bracing for its own winter storm that' expected to start dumping inches of snow Friday night. Snow removal crews are on standby. The airport has closed twice this winter already because of weather-- most recently because of an ice storm.

An airport spokesperson said there's nothing staff can do before conditions begin to prevent another closure.

If you are flying Friday or Saturday, it's advised to call the airline ahead and make sure everything is on schedule. Another resource to do that is www.flightaware.com
