SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - It has been a dry year and across the valley people are keeping their lawns green watering, but besides helping the grass you are making a mosquito breeding ground and might not even know it .

Sam Dickson, Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement Manager told ABC4 it is over watering that's the problem. Dickson said, "Because of all the over watering and the extra watering on a daily basis there is a lot of water in those current gutters and around homes."

Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement is working across the city with one goal: reduce the threat of West Nile Virus. One way they are doing that is with a bicycle team riding through the city looking for gutters filled with water and mosquitoes.

When they find the standing water they throw packets with bacteria that targets the mosquito larvae and kills them.

While this definitely helps, the reality is there is only so much an abatement team can do.

Dickson said, "We will never get rid of mosquitoes, just want to get them to a tolerable level."
