SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Gays could soon be welcomed to join Boy Scouts.

It’s an idea that is being considered by the national BSA.

“If that were to happen it his could be a monumental decision,” says Valerie Larabee with Utah’s Gay, Lesbian, Bi and Transexual (GLBT). “(This is) an opportunity for young people all around our nation.”

But there still could be some road blocks. The national organization says if it approves the concept it would still allow local branches to have the final say.

In a press release from BSA, the organization says: “The policy change under discussion would allow the religious, civic or educational organization to oversee and deliver scouting to determine how to address the issue.”

Parents whose sons were boy scouts aren’t thrilled with this.

“I'm a traditionalist, I just don't want them to change,” says Merlin Partridge. “Boy scouts teaches them how to be a good person and teaches values.”

But Heather Kramer whose parents were boy scout leaders says it’s not a problem with her.:

“I can see a lot of people not to happy with this but I don't have a problem with it,” Kramer says.

A decision could come sometime next week when the board of the national BSA meets.
