KEARNS, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A family said their beloved family dog was shot dead by a neighbor who walked by their home.

The incident happened on the 5144 West Silver Tip Drive (5450 South) Thursday evening.

Lene Nonu said his American pit bull, Hulk, was on their front lawn. Hulk ran toward the neighbor and his dog as they approached Nonu’s house.

The neighbor allegedly pulled a handgun and shot Hulk, killing the dog on the street.

“It really hurts me and there’s nothing I can do because he is gone,” Nonu said.

Sooga Nonu, Lene’s wife, said the man did not try to yell or tell Hulk to stop running.

Unified Police said the man who pulled the trigger will likely not face charges. A spokesman said the man claimed to hit the dog with the gun, but it accidentally went off. They said it is easy to have a finger slip on the trigger if people do not know how to handle firearms properly.

The family isn’t satisfied with the investigation. They want a change to Utah’s concealed firearms law.

They now only have memories of Hulk that was a beloved family pet for over 10 years.

“I lost my dog,” Nonu said. “He was my best friend.”

You were not there odub56, from all the witness this man did not have his dog on the leash..He passed by the guys and his wife that witness this whole thing, and where the shooting took place..It was only few feet away from him not mention hulks owner was right there..How can he say no one was there, when everyone saw how he tried to put the leash on his dog..You can come up with a better story to cover your ass..You don't shoot a gun until your life is in danger period..And don't carry a full loaded gun around neighborhood full kids..

To everyone trying to justify why the dog was off the leash, that's the risk you take when you let your dog off the leash. Same thing as risking it will dart into the road and get hit.

Tmcneece9966, typical overreaction without reading what was written. I said since when has the MEDIA ever treated pitbulls as anything other than monsters. If this has been a story about a pitbulls attacking someone it would have read "monster pitbull on rampage" or similar nonsense. I was attacking abc for their incredible bias in reporting. Sensationalism headlining at its worst.

I know the man who protected his Dog, his Wife, and Himself from the attacking Pit Bull, in this news story. We have all seen and heard the stories of dogs, children, adults and even the very owners of Pit Bulls being horribly attacked, maimed and even killed by this breed. This was self defense, a right we all have. Some facts from the Attacked man. His dog was leashed. He and his Wife were together walking their also "Beloved" dog Dudley. They were in the street. The Pit Bull charged unconfined, from it's masters property to the street. The Pit Bull attacked and had Dudley on the ground with it's jaw locked on Dudley's neck and was shaking him. Dudley's owner grabbed his gun and struck the attacking Pit Bull in self defense and the gun discharged. There were no children or other people near them in the street. Dudley was taken to the vet and has neck injuries including cartilage and neck muscle separation from the powerful jaw lock of the Pit Bull, and is on antibiotics and pain medication. Dudley's owner reacted to an imminent threat to his family but is also sad about the whole situation and sorry for his neighbors loss and wishes that the dog hadn't been able to attack causing this whole mess. This story would not have happened if the people confined their dog to their yard. Thank goodness the dog didn't attack a child. Why isn't channel 4 news telling both sides of the story.

Once again ~ those who have the most negative opinions have the least experience! Nothing said is goind to change what has happened. The best thing that can happen now is to concentrate on those who have been hurt from this incident. More comments and focus needs to be on what was learned from this. What can be done differently in the future. I personally do not know the Nonu's family member that was taken from them but I would love to meet them and help ease their personal pain. There are many others who feel the same too. It needs to be known there are still good empathetic human beings on this planet. Not all of us can make everyone feel and think the same way. This entire story is sad, wrong,& unfortunate. Dog haters do not belong here. What is gained from expressing hate?Only people who have their own personal insecurities would cheer on a weak person who kills out of sheer ignorant selfishness! It is also a fact...how a person treats an animal is also how they treat a human being. Watch people that own a pet animal. How they treat that animal who depends on a human being so they survive shows what type of individual they are and how they are to others. Beware of someone like this who carries a concealed weapon.

This is very obvious and clear now.One trait of the American Pit bull has is loyalty.True to his nature he took a bullet protecting his 1 yr old. Hulk did what any good American Pit Bull would do he peacefully challenged and intruder and was shot for defending his property. This gun owner knew what he was doing. This was premeditated. His dog was off leash and yes so was Hulk.any dog worth his salt would do the same.An American Pit Bull does not need to be aggressive in all situations first they analyze and use there confidence...there was no harm coming the way of the gun owner. He let his dog loose he had his finger on the trigger and baited the situation and took his cheap shot. For ALL dog owners this cannot rest. Many own Dogs for protection instead of a gun. This cannot rest. This was wrong, just a mean cruel premeditated kill.

@kerry , You can't read can you, cause I didn't write that, jack I wrote, I'm writing in capitals so you can read , "WE'VE ALL DONE IT LET ARE DOG OUTSIDE WITHOUT ONE ON IF THEY ARE BEHAVED AND STAYED IN THE YARD..... Did you get it that time? Your probably the whack job that did to sit here and justify his actions.. Or you honestly have no concern on the people around you to say you would shoot him with children and neighbors around.. Honestly doesn't matter you have no heart it shows until something like this happens to you or a loved one of yours Which I would hope not, cause I wouldn't wish this on anyone, I have a heart. And no it shouldn't have costed his life going outside with his owner and grand baby you just have a twisted way of thinking.....

@Sheba - to use your words, the dog didn't behave and did not stay in the yard. It cost Hulk his life.
