FARMINGTON, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A plea deal is in the works for a former Bountiful Junior High Math teacher accused of having sex with a 14-year-old student.

40-year old Valynne Bowers was in court in Farmington on Thursday.

She's charged with rape and forcible sodomy; charges that could send her to prison.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys say they're trying to avoid trial for the victim's sake.

“We're just trying to work things out to you know, make things easier on the victim to avoid trial and avoid having him testify,” said Bowers’ defense attorney Rich Gallegos.

The victim's family has to approve of any deal before it's official.

Why are women who do this get off with a slap on the wrist? They should do jail time just like men do.
