SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A call for your help tonight from the Salt Lake County Animal Services. They say they have an unusually high number of animals waiting for homes right now.
In an effort to get them all adopted out, the shelter is waiving adoption fees for both cats and dogs. The deal will last from tomorrow until the end of October.
The shelter has seen a record number of adoptions this year. The director says it's unusual to have this many pets in need of a home in the fall.
Currently the shelter has 195 dogs and more than 300 cats and kittens.

Salt Lake County, UT – Due to an unusually high number of animals waiting for homes at the shelter, Salt Lake County Animal Services will be waiving all adoption fees from October 16th through October 31st.
“Despite record breaking pet adoptions this year and our best live release rate ever, our shelter is unusually full for this late in the year.” says Shawni Larrabee, Director of Salt Lake County Animal Services. “We are committed to exploring all options that successfully match a pet with a new home and we are hoping this promotion will catch the attention of people that are looking for a pet but haven’t yet considered adopting from the shelter.”
“Potential adopters are still required to pass the same screening requirements, regardless of any promotion we are running,” says Larrabee.
The summer and early fall months are always busy for shelters but usually the population begins to drop off by mid October. As of October 12th the County shelter is caring for 195 dogs and puppies and over 300 cats and kittens.
All adoptions include sterilization, microchip and vaccinations. The FREE dog adoption promotion will run from October 16th through the end of the month. The Free Cat Adoption program is an ongoing, year round program.
